Heian – Peaceful mind

Meaning of “Heian”

“Heian” (平安) translates as “peaceful mind”. Anko Itosu created the series circa 1905 so beginners could safely learn core principles.

Heian kata list

  1. Heian Shodan – Downward blocks and stepping oi‑zuki in zenkutsu‑dachi.
  2. Heian Nidan – Adds mae‑geri and shuto‑uke in back stance.
  3. Heian Sandan – Emphasises horse stance, side kicks and nukite. 
  4. Heian Yondan – Four‑direction transitions and back‑fist strikes. 
  5. Heian Godan – Introduces the jump, x‑block and tate‑shuto.

Training objectives

  • Structured progression from ground‑stable to airborne control. 
  • Focus on hikite & hanmi for hip‑torque habits.

Tips for practice

  • Use a 1‑3‑1 tempo: block (1) – settle (3) – counter (1). 
  • Visualise opponents at every turn to keep bunkai alive. 
  • Alternate slow “okuri” reps with fast bursts to sync breathing and kime.
